Audi is one of the world’s leading luxury automakers. They have a globally recognizable design and logo that exudes performance, elegance and innovation. Like their slogan “ Truth in engineering”, Audi continues to provide customers with tech filled luxury and performance cars. Audi has the right vehicle for every requirement. Whether sporty, luxurious or compact, Audi has a vehicle for you. In this post we’ll examine the different models, and provide a guide if you’re considering a used Audi as your next vehicle.
Audi uses a quite simple alpha-numeric nomenclature for their cars. The models use the letters “A” “Q” & “R” “S” and “T” followed by a number. As a rule of thumb, the higher the number, the bigger the car.
The A Model is Audi’s base model. They come in sedan, coupe ,cabriolet and hatchbacks.
The A1 is a sporty hatchback. Unfortunately it is not available for purchase in Canada. For this reason we won’t spend too much time talking about it. The hatchback allows for an extra (approximate) 65 litres of storage in the trunk. Newer versions have the option of 1.0L 3-Cylinder engines. Older models have a 2.0L engine and 4-cylinder netting 200HP. All are turbocharged and available in manual or automatic. On another note, let us know if you get your hands on one!
The Audi A3 is a small family/compact car. Older versions came in hatchbacks, but more recent models end up as just a small sedan.
The A4 is Audi’s quintessential luxury sedan. It comes standard with a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It produces about 220hp even in older models. You can expect a premium leather interior with a sporty and slique exterior. There are several trims within the model such as Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige. Estimated combined fuel economy ranges from 43 KM/L for an older model such as a 2015.
Packages: Each Audi in the A class comes with a series of upgraded packages customers can choose from. For the most part, they are similar throughout all models.
The premium package comes with 17 inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, fog lights, tri-zone climate control and a 6.5 inch (or more) digital display.
Premium Plus Package:
This package comes with 18 inch alloy wheels, auto dimming rearview mirror, heated side mirrors, heated seats. You can option for the technology package which puts navigation, rear view camera and integrated smartphone on the display. The technology package also comes with an upgraded 14 speaker, Bang & Olufson sound system.
The prestige package has the technology package included standard. It has optional driver assist in cruise control, adaptive steering, and driver selectable modes to adjust acceleration transmission and comfort settings.
Optional to Premium Plus and Prestige packages, the sport package offers performance tuned suspension, sport seating and driver select. It raises the level of performance with larger 19 inch alloy tires, sport steering wheel and a gloss black exterior trim. S-line Audi interiors (from the S model that we’ll get to) are also available for the A4.
The Audi A5 is an elongated two door coupe. When compared to its competitors, it’s a sports car you can drive all season. It comes with the reliability of a 2.0L turbo engine and sustainability of an all wheel drive system. Complementing it’s stylish exterior aesthetics is an unexpected amount of space on the inside. The interior is elegant leather. One downside some people believe the controls are a bit unintuitive. This is because the car is designed and made for Europeans. It’s intuitive for people who have been around those types of cars their whole life. It’s just something to keep in mind if you’re test driving an A5-you’ll catch on in no time.
The base A5 Premium comes with 18 inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, bluetooth connectivity, 6.5 inch display and 10 speaker sound system. The Premium Plus package adds an S-Line trim: bumpers, side sill blades, fender gages and door sill inserts. The prestige package adds adaptive headlights, a 14 speaker sound system (12 in the cabriolet) and a technology package with a larger screen and even a DVD player. A used Audi A5 is a wonderful make for someone who is wanting to step into the luxury or sport category of vehicles. It’s elegant, dependable and has above average performance.
The Audi A6 is more of a full sized vehicle when compared to its younger sibling, the A4. It offers more rear leg and shoulder room, and more cargo volume than the smaller sedan. Conversely, the A6 is heavier than the A4, giving it less km/L in base models. With that said, they have the similar powerful 2.0L TFSI engine. The A6 delivers more torque and horsepower due to its heavier make, and has a 6-Cylinder engine. The A6 may be better for someone who will be carrying passengers or cargo frequently, while the A4 may make more sense for a more personal car. Like the A4, the A6 comes in premium, premium plus models and can have different trims such as “S” as well.
The Audi A7 was first released in the United States in 2012. They essentially made a fast back version of its A6 sedan. They both have powerful V6 engines and perform almost identically. Some reviews say the A7 tends to be slightly more comfortable than the A6, especially in the Prestige trim. It’s cabin is quieter in the A7 versus the A6.
The Audi A8 is a full size luxury sedan. It’s engineered to an incredible and exacting standard. Increasingly detailed interior, powerful engine yet still well mannered – the A8 holds its own against the world’s best. Its sports a V8, 4.L engine and has quick acceleration and break times.
The Audi Q series is a crossover vehicle. There are Audi Q3’s, Q5’s and Q7’s. Similar to the A series, the higher the number, the larger the vehicle.
The Audi Q3 comes standard with quattro all-wheel drive, tons of connectivity and a clean spacious interior. It has an athletic build, and comes in various trims and sizes. Wheel sizes can get up to 19 inches and there is lots of room for customization. It rides smooth on rough roads. It is very quiet on busy highways. It’s available in Premium, Premium Plus. Edmunds experts recommends the premium plus package. It comes with a turbocharged 2.0L inline-4, 6 speed automatic configuration.
The Audi Q5 has been the leader in the premium crossover section for two years in a row now. They’ve posted five consecutive years of sales growth. This isn’t for no reason. They come with touch screen display and navigation, quattro all wheel drive. It’s available in 2.0T Premium, 2.0T Premium Plus, 3.0T Prestige and a 2.0T hybrid prestige. It’s essentially the basic, reliable and affordable premium crossover. Used Audi Q5’s usually sell pretty fast here at S.A.S.S, but we have two in our inventory right now. We just got a lightly used 2018 Q5 in off of a trade in. It has just over 20,000km. The other is a much more affordable 2011 Audi Q5 (in picture).
The Q7 is the largest of the Q class. Despite its size, it’s quite nimble and sensitive. The interior picks up cues and technology from the luxurious and understated A8 sedan. Newer models of the Q7 are impressive in the sense that they can almost drive themselves. They are loaded with sensors and detectors that can help relieve drivers from long distance tedium by maintaining speed and distance to cars in front while maintaining speed. Included is also Audiss pre sense brake system, full side airbags, front parking sensors and a backup camera. Coupled with top of the class technology is exceptional comfort and quality materials. Premium Plus and Prestige packages get blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and side exit alerts. Some older models come in a diesel option as well (in picture).
The S serie is Audi’s sport line. They are direct competitors with the likes of BMW’s M Class. They have larger motors than the A series, more fine tuned suspension, steering and technology. A big difference between BMW’s M series and Audis S is the quattro all wheel drive that comes with the Audi. On a clean racing track, many drivers may opt for the rear wheel drive M-Class. But in a Canadian snowstorm for day to day use, an S-class sedan will prove to be more realistic and reliable. The S trim is available as an upgrade to most A class sedans to make the A more like an S. Here’s a list of all the S-Series models:
- S3: Small Sports Hatchback, similar to the A1
- S4 to S8: Mid-sized sports Sedans, Wagons, coupes and hatchbacks.
Imagine each S# matching up with its little brother in the A series, then souped up for maximum performance and luxury. All the models are available in Premium Trims to add that extra bit of comfort, style and useability. The S series is perfect for someone who values high performance in a vehicle but won’t sacrifice daily reliability and practicality.
The Audi TT is a small, quick and sporty coupe. It has one of the more outgoing bodies of Audi’s and is sure to turn heads. The performance of the TT’s turbocharges quattro 2.0L 4-cyl engine doesn’t rely on higher fuel economy or safety. The TT is available in S Sport Seat package which has full leather upholstery and diamond stitching. The S also comes standard with 19” wheels, sport tuned suspension and special exterior trims. The TT Roadster eliminates the two rear seats but gains a center pass-through ski bag along with a folding fabric roof, roll hoops and a power deployable wind blocker.
Audi R8, standing for Roadster is based on the “Audi Space Frame” platform which is similar to the A8. A true sports car, it offers superior speed, control, precision and style. It boasts an extremely strong V10 engine that’s ready for the racetrack.
Standing for “RennSport” (or RacingSport) is based on Audi’s A5 platform. Similar to the R8, the RS is an elite sport racing car. It’s engine is smaller than the R8’s, but still has great acceleration from the turbocharged V6. One of the “cons” of this vehicle is that the engine sound is too muted for a performance car.
Whether your just looking to get your foot in the door with an entry level luxury car, or you’re ready to take on the racetrack; Audi’s got you covered. You can count on just about every model to get you through any type of weather in comfort, style and with a high level of enjoyment.
